Setup already purchased domain with hosting

Do you want to setup your already purchased domain with your new hosting account? When you go to purchase your hosting you will always be asked about what you  want to do with a domain, whether its purchase one with them or to use a domain you already own. For this guide we will be going through the steps to add your already owned domain.

Note: This guide shows you how to setup your domain from GoDaddy to HostGator but this process is similar throughout all domain/hosting services.

First you must create your account on HostGator by visiting HostGator.com and entering your domain during the process (select “I already have a domain, and enter your domain there).

Once you type in your domain, select Continue and go through to continuing the checkout. If you are taking our website course, you can continue back through the checkout process lesson and come back to this guide once you have complete that.

Now go to your GoDaddy account (or other domain service) where you purchased your domain.

Once logged in you will need to find your domain and select the + next to Domain and select Manage.

Now you are managing your domain name you will need to locate Nameservers.

Select Manage under nameservers. Select Custom and Edit Nameservers (Nameservers vary so please check this article out before entering nameservers) then type in NS8421.HOSTGATOR.COM in #1 and NS8421.HOSTGATOR.COM #2 – select Save then allow it to validate and your nameservers will change over meaning your domain is pointing to your hosting.

Note: Name server changes usually take 24 to 48 hours to fully start working. This period, called propagation, is the projected length of time it takes for root name servers and cache records across the entire web to be updated with your website’s DNS information.
