This plugin uses a blacklist to filter your incoming traffic and block “spam referrer” attacks. Referrer spam is a way to pass fake referer information to websites. These spammy links then appear in a users analytics and can lead you to click on malicious websites.
A simple way of avoiding this is by installing the plugin SpamReferrerBlock. So firstly, go to your WordPress dashboard and select Plugins > Add New. Then type in SpamReferrerBlock.
Install and Activate the plugin – you will then find the plugin located under Settings > Spam Referrer Block.
Here you have General Options which include:
Then below that you can select how you want your website to react to the spammers:
You can also add in a custom URL to direct them. Maybe create a page where they have to pass a human test to enter your site.
Next you have the Custom Blacklist – here you can add the domains you think are spam referrers. Then right at the bottom of the page is a list of known spam referrers.
If you see a referrer spam URL in your analytics that is not on this automated blacklist then add it to the Custom Blacklist and select save and the plugin will start blocking it.
