Sitemaps are more important that you think. What is a sitemap? A sitemap is a list of pages on a website that is accessible to everyone. XML sitemaps are used to tell search engines about all of the pages that exist on their website. You can also control which links are more important than others and how frequently they are updated. While sitemaps do not boost your search rankings, it allows search engines to better crawl your website.
So with WordPress another task like this is easier than ever thanks to WordPress plugins. Simply go to our WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins > Add New and type in Google XML Sitemaps.
Once installed you can open it in Settings > XML-Sitemap. The plugin has done all the hard work for you and now you have a sitemap on your website and you can view it at the top of the page where it says: The URL to your sitemap index file is: http://simpleturtle.com/sitemap.xml.
But there is still more to do!
COURSE: WEBMASTER TOOLS SETUP
Once you have setup and verified your account you can Submit a sitemap to webmaster tools to begin crawling your website.
Go to your webmaster tools account, select Sitemaps and at the top right hand corner you will find ADD/TEST SITEMAP. Click on that and add sitemap.xml and Submit.
